This piece has multiple purposes, and you can use it freely, but they were designed to make air flow less restrictive on the front bumper - allowing better airflow to intercoolers and radiators. But they can also be used as ventilation (See Pictures) allowing constant airflow to the cabin and driver comfort.

They're made out of aerospace grade aluminium, which is water and chemical resistant, and for added protection, you can purchase them in a black powder coated version - but feel free to add your own touches like colour matching etc.
